If HR created this, would you find this as a decent way to incorporate the swimming skill into everyday game-life?

Haelrahv Scuba Diving:

Pros:
> Ability to find varied treasure from poor - unique.
>Ancient Coins, artifacts, etc.
>Useable jewelry that has the potential to be 'magical' (artisan restoration needed)
>Antique arms and armors to be repaired by Techs (or artisans)
>Chance to find water-logged chests.
> More restoreable items for Artisans
> More gadgets for Techs to create (water-proof camera for underwater photography and water-proof flashlights)
> A new environment to explore (i.e. Excavation only underwater)
> More unique 'gems' for jewelry (i.e. reef, shell, coral, pearls)
> Unique ingredients for new potions (tracker-gatherable)
>Bring back a 'fish' of some sort for trackers to harvest for ingredients.
>scales being aquirable through skinning.
>Fish in these areas should act as NPC civvies, and not as auto-aggro critters like Berami.
> Multiple 'difficulty' levels - novice, adept, master level areas that open up according to skill level. (note: Treasure, especially the higher-end loot, should be open for all areas, only a little easier to find in the higher difficulty levels.)
> New tools and diving gear

Cons:
> Death by drowning.
> Injury from reef, coral, and other mishaps.
> Chance to freeze to death - based on level of difficulty (aka, deeper dive), cold resitance, gear. (i.e. If you're wearing an insulated diving suit, it should help, but not prevent, hypothermia from setting in.)
> Possible problems - decompression symptoms, and other unique status effects.
> Loss of hearing
> Headaches
> Vomiting
> Paralysis

In my mind, I picture this as a world-based exploration set-up similar to the space-bound excavation. I think the same code would work for both, with some alteration required. What I see is a multi-step process much, much like the space-exploration.

1) It is imperative that you buy the gear needed. It doesn't make a lot of sense to go diving without a mask, unit and suit. Flippers and an oyster bag are not necessary, but are a good idea. Also, with the unique tools (smaller pick, oyster knife, shovel, etc) they are not necessary, but open up more options with each room (i.e. Some rooms may have a piece of reef that can be mined or excavated while others might have shipwrecks, etc).

2)So now you have the necessary goods, and you've got the proper attire on, you go to the Denavae Underwater Exploration and Research building to get a ticket for one roundtrip ride on a specially designed skiff. This is just like the shuttle for the excavation trips. However, and the idea is good for the shuttles, too, is that the skiff has a special janitor-free storage locker to store goods in if you run the risk of becoming too encumbered to swim. Just like the shuttle, it is an automatic (or just invisible pilot) journey to the desired scuba point.

3)Once at the scuba point (some may take longer due to the depth of the dive ... gotta go further out), you check your gear and DIVE in (or just DOWN). You'll appear in a room like this:

Code:
[Coastal Reef]
Surrounded by miles and miles of tranquil blue surf, there is a certain sense of peace with being underwater.  Schools of glittering silver and pink fish flicker in the light, while other, larger, marine life float aimlessly around.
You also see a large outcropping of bright orange reef.
Obvious exits: East and down.

This shows you several things; one, that you are indeed underwater. Two, that there is a reef here that you can excavate, and three, that you are in an adept level area (at least) by the 'down'. This shows that you can go further down, off the coastal reef. Of course, like the excavation, you get randomized rooms. So, you can potentially get a small ship wreckage for more chances of treasure finding.

4)This is the fun part. This step includes all of the wondeful looting of the ocean floor providing you with all sorts of fun stuff to do.

5) Emerging. This is a tricky part, as well as going further down. You have to watch the messaging as you enter a deeper or shallower area as it could give you a message to depressurize. If you do not depressurize and continue to move, you run the risk of several various effects from minor debilitating headaches, to death.

That's all I have for now. I'm coming up with other things too, so stay tuned for more Water-involved goodness! Please feel free to add anything extra you think might improve upon this idea. I'll incorporate it and update everything as I go to get a more well-rounded idea up.

And another fun gadget for Techs to create that goes with my vehicle thread I haven't finished ...

Code:
glance
You are holding a small water-proof DPV in your right hand and nothing in your left.

Or PDV. A) DPV stands for diver propulsion vehicle or b) PDV stands for personal diving vehicle. Take your pick, but I'm leaning towards DPV just because it sounds spiffier.

The way I see this working is one of three ways:

First, it just gives a decent bonus to swimming.
Second, it cancels the 'attempt to swim' roll, and just moves a character. However, this comes with increased RT since the character is just relying on the machine to pull them.
Third, and my personal favorite, it just reduces the roll required to swim a certain direction. That way, the character is still swimming on their own power, there is no extra RT, and it doesn't completely negate the need to train swimming.

And did I mention that techs should be able to make these (like other vehicles)?
