I was talking to a friend about Haelrahv, and she was very interested in how the game works and such (I'm trying to talk her into re-joining, she played before but only for a few months.). We were discussing marksmanship, and the engagement system. And she was wondering how different firearms fare at different ranges.

Store bought AG10 Handgun:
Use of this weapon in melee combat requires proficiency in the blunt weapons skill.
Use of this weapon when fired requires proficiency in the marksmanship skill.
You are certain it is of average quality and workmanship.
This weapon uses AG10 rounds for ammunition.
This weapon is unsuited for use in underwater environments.

This weapon is capable of doing insignificant blunt damage.
This weapon is not suitable for piercing attacks.
This weapon is not suitable for slashing attacks.
This weapon is capable of doing impressive damage when fired.
This weapon is capable of firing a single shot at a time.

It looks as though it would be excellently suited to wield at melee range.
It looks as though it would be advantageous at pole range.
It looks as though it would be advantageous at pilum range.
It looks as though it would be practical at missile range.

That makes sense. Decent from a distance, but increased accuracy and power at melee range.

Store bought TG10 Shotgun:
You carefully look over a series TG10 shotgun.
It is worn on or over a single shoulder.
Use of this weapon in melee combat requires proficiency in the blunt weapons skill.
Use of this weapon when fired requires proficiency in the marksmanship skill.
You are certain it is of average quality and workmanship.
This weapon uses TG10 shells for ammunition.
This weapon is unsuited for use in underwater environments.

This weapon is capable of doing weak blunt damage.
This weapon is not suitable for piercing attacks.
This weapon is not suitable for slashing attacks.
This weapon is capable of doing excellent damage when fired.
This weapon is capable of firing a single shot at a time.

It looks as though it would be excellently suited to wield at melee range.
It looks as though it would be advantageous at pole range.
It looks as though it would be manageable at pilum range.
It looks as though it would be clumsy at missile range.

This weapon requires two hands to wield.
That item appears to be on sale for $5,500.
Roundtime: 3 sec.

This makes perfect sense, especially for a shotgun.

Storebought TG23 Field Rifle:
You carefully look over a series TG23 field rifle.
It is worn on or over a single shoulder.
Use of this weapon in melee combat requires proficiency in the blunt weapons skill.
Use of this weapon when fired requires proficiency in the marksmanship skill.
You are certain it is of average quality and workmanship.
This weapon uses AG9 rounds for ammunition.
This weapon is unsuited for use in underwater environments.

This weapon is capable of doing weak blunt damage.
This weapon is not suitable for piercing attacks.

Roundtime: 3 sec.

Now this is where I get a little confused. It makes sense for shotguns and handguns to do better damage and result in better accuracy at closer ranges. But they both seem to outshine the rifle. Shouldn't the rifle be *THE* missile/pilum range weapon? Shouldn't it be easier/better to wield at distances? I mean honestly, a rifle is NOT a small weapon, and like with polearm users, if you can get past that range and get inside their defense, the polearm wielder is pretty much screwed considering how large the weapon is. I would think this would apply to rifles, considering they're none to small.

I'm not looking for absolute realism, I don't like reality in my games...If I wanted a real adventure with guns I'd go grab my shotgun and walk out the front door. I just want to know why it seems the rifle is a bit lacking in usefulness at ranges.

The person who did this code is no longer on staff, so they can't be asked, but it doesn't look right to me either, so I did some digging.

I found that it looks like all non-shotguns that require two hands were tied together - specifically assault type weapons and sniping type weapons in one group. Assault weapons are excellent close up but poor at a far range, and likewise, sniping weapons should be used at a range.

Now, further complicating this is that the actual performance of the weapons works differently than it would appear in appraise, and the sniping weapons were already properly accounted for there. So this is really a display issue it seems, and nothing more. I modified appraise and you'll see the results if you appraise different two-handed guns.
