So from what it looks like, the guard went after a non-existant guard.

A number of medium sized rocks jut from the ground here, making travel uncomfortable for some in places. The trail stretches onwards in both directions in a seemingly endless path. A tree beside the road provides a bit of shade for the weary traveller.
You also see a saifbraelsh tree, the corpse of a royal guard who is lying down and a royal guard.
You notice exits leading east and west.

It stopped after the second time I looked. And I don't know if this had anything to do with anything, but I quickly went one direction and came back and the guard has disappeared.
