I would kill to have an onyx sword, but onyx is not considered a metal so I can't make one. Am I the only one who thinks you should be able to make swords out of some other materials that you can't currently do it with?

If I recall correctly, onyx is just a specific type of quartz.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quartz

Even though quartz is a 7 on the Mohs scale, compare that to a diamond's 10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_Scale). Quartz is just barely tougher than a steel file (according to that last wiki), so maybe for something like a butterknife.. yeah.. knock yourself out. But I doubt you'd be able to find an onyx/quartz deposit big enough to wittle an actual sword out of it.

In that case, sign me up for a diamond zweihander of ultimate power.

Sure, except for the ultimate power part.

No deal.

Anyway, on topic.

I didn't think to wiki for onyx. I followed a couple of links and, yes, onyx was used as crude tools/weaponry way back in the day. I just cannot see why you would want to use onyx when we have much tougher materials (diamond aside) available on this planet. RP, perhaps, but mneh.

If you're trying to make a stab for reality... We can crush emeralds and diamonds by hand with a wooden pestle. ^.^; Fantasy game remember? Why not have onyx swords?

A sword of crystal is longer than a pestle the size of a finger, and as a result has a lower breaking point (structually weaker).

That's not to say it's a bad idea, but I'd see it in the same lines of poor quality as bronze in armor; lightweight, but at the sacrifice of effectiveness.

Perhaps incorporating metal and crystal....or crystal and wood.

Edit: Or there can be some interesting alchemic formula or technical device that can somehow molecularly change the hardess of crystals. :3 Yay for science fiction!

As far as I'm aware, the only way to harden a crystal is to pack more molecules closer together. Which would mean removing impurities. And sometimes those impurities are the sole reason the crystal formed (anyone's that cooked their own caramel knows the angst a SINGLE tiny bit of debri can cause with the sugar-water mixture).

Also, if you have too many molecules packed together, this can potentially cause increased instability. The force of repulsion from the electrons can really kick you in the ass sometimes.

I understand the attraction of using a crystal blade or whatever. It's a pretty deep fantasy thing. But I would just like to see a plausible explanation for it being in the game. Because while we partaking in a fantasy game, I think we do have a good undercurrent of realism behind that.

A reasoning? We built a device that can pack molecules together far beyond the imagination of people 600 years in the past. IE us. Or, Haelrahv onyx/diamonds/whatever are not the same as Earth ones. OR...it's magic!

I don't see why we are being so antimagic all of a sudden, when most of the good travel methods ARE magic. Maybe just make it take a magical upkeep. cast Reinforce onyx blade!

I'm not a blade user, but it sounds neat to me.
