Well I don't really fish and I can't get nskills, but the changes sound great. Especially the treasure boxes.
What quality boxes can you get? Does it depend on skill? And could the Lucky trait affect it? |

The primary goal of fishing remains catching fish...getting boxes is a byproduct of that effort. I worked it out so that one has a chance to find these boxes without causing any great amount of loss of fish in the process. So, skill is helpful to a degree but also irrelevant to a degree. Likewise, the lucky trait has no effect because not all players will prefer a box over a nice sized fish. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

hey trevor, for those of us who are actually interested in collecting the contents of the boxes, is it possible for some kind of bait to be introduced (maybe some kind of magnet or something) that tries to specifically go for them like some of the baits attract specific fish?
that way, i can curse about fish eating my magnets _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!

Oh well that sucks. At least the reduced RT thing was nice. |

While it's a lot of trial and error, some baits actually do affect how likely you are to snag a box. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

okay, erm, fishing question.
it seems the people who are horrid at fishing (or at least don't have the stats/skills for it) get more boxes because the fish don't bite but the boxes do.
i'm just not sure why someone using the same pole/bait with the same next to no skill as me (but less coord/perc/metal... which i think has to do with fishing... could be quite wrong) is getting nothing but crates while i get nothing but fish.
that would be great if fish were the better prize, but i really don't want fish. at all.
edit: so i moved from the beach to the pavillion, and then i get a chest. maybe the aged ones just hate me, heh.
edit: i'm so confused now. aged chests are impossible for me to get, but i get two waterlogged in a row. _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!

I think you're right. The worse you are at fishing, the more boxes you get. I'm using the same bait as someone far worse. She gets boxes almost every time. I've gotten 3. _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage

I know you can cast without bait, but i don't know if it even gives you the chance of getting anything. i'll try though. _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!

Why do spinners and spoons get lost like bait when you catch a fish?
they are a reusable tackle. _________________ Mellie Amresh says, "Send someone with a bigger dick."

okay, it's settled.
sucking at fishing results in boxes.
this is the stat comparison. i'm including the ones that i assume may or may not be used in fishing.
Code: |
Yaru: Level 51 Artisan
coordination: 130 (147)
perception: 80 (82)
mentality: 80
fishing: 0 (5) ... or (10) in some areas
boxes: 2/20 casts |
Code: |
Yaru's Magical Performer Character: Level 1 Performer
coordination: 5
perception: 5
mentality: 5
fishing: 4 (5)
boxes: 4/5 casts |
what i'm assuming is happening is that when someone has a low amount of skill, they are unable to catch any fish at all. because of that, and because chests require no skill (after all, they're boxes, so they're not that evasive nor are they required to be tricked), they eventually grab hold while fish don't.
on the other hand, Yaru is catching fish because he is able to detect at least the lowest level fish due to his stats (which compsenate the fact that he sucks at fishing), causing him to get fish before a chest ever is grabbed.
edit: by the by, i love the new treasure chest stuff. it's cool and actually has some kind of background story to it that i wish to someday trick Mickey into revealing by letting Artisans restore some of the exceptionally damaged stuff found. i have no clue how to fix this, nor am i saying it's terrible. i'm just posting my data because it's odd that someone able to fish can't find boxes because, well, he's able to. once again, though, i realize this is somewhat intentional because the goal of fishing is to get fish, not boxes. just that because the box thing is new everyone wants boxes and such _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!

I just fixed a bug here, as per NEWS. In a nutshell, when a player got a real fish on the line and then subsequently would have lost it, there was intended to be an 8% chance of instead snagging a box and 92% of a line snap. Instead the reverse was true so excessive box drops occured.
I have corrected this, while at the same changing that drop rate from 8% to 10%.
This has no effect on other situations wherein a box can be snagged (there are multiple scenarios for this result).
Also, to debunk another myth, you do need either some skill or good bait for the location to get boxes. The way the system is set up,you have to actually get a fish interested enough to bite, then in some cases that fish is replaced with a box. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

Simply for gameplay value. Realism wasn't part of that decision. _________________ "Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something." -- Plato

can the spinners and such then be put into some kind of container type thing so they can be bought in bulk, a la the worm cartons?
also, more shop oddness:
1) you can buy the notice at the place, but once you put it somewhere you can never pick it back up. floor, backpack, vault, whatever. once it's there it's stuck. Morrigan was nice enough to save me from that mistake before today.
2) the six pack of booze at the place is empty. there were some very disappointed alcoholics fishing yesterday.
3) (edit: okay, so this is more a tangent request, heh) will there ever be a situation that allows us to specifically hunt for the boxes or things contained within, like deep sea treasure diving? seriously, the stuff is some cool stuff. it's right up there with excavation when it comes to enjoyable relic hunting. it will also give people who train swimming something to do that doesn't just involve swimming to a place to hunt. _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!
