I suggested this in-game, but Kit thought I should post it for discussion.
Just some basic gadget ideas, so we techies won't have to rely on magic or magic devices to do some of the things taken for granted:
1. A teleport gadget that emulates the teleport potions or teleport spells. Perhaps a basic model could take you to only one place (predetermined when you build it), and more advanced models (read: high skill level) or hacking could make it take you to several places, and/or maybe back and forth between two places or more.
2. A light-refracting field generator gadget. This would work just like an invisibility potion.
3. A thoughtwave collection and transmission gadget. This would work like telepathy.
I'm assuming that gadgets will have a limited amount of uses before they need to a) be repaired or b) become inoperable and you have to build another one. With the changes to the magic system (forgetting spells over time) and the fact that potions get used up, this fits along those lines.
There are those who will say "you don't need that, you can get the spell". From both a practical and an RP standpoint, I say "Yes, we do." Zap has flaws that hinder his use of magic (practical application of gadgets vs. magic), and because, being a Technician, he doesn't trust magic that much, he would rather find a technology-oriented way to get the same benefits that certains spells and psionic powers grant (RP application). I know there are other Techs out there who feel the same way on the RP point.
Anyway, I'll shut up now and let the populace take over. _________________ --Zap

1. This is where I'd think something like Aviation could come in.
3. The tech version of telepathy is called a comm. |

Personal transportation devices that work like rift potions could be pretty cool. If there was a base station built in different places (Llanfair, Chodaku, Echak) you could set your transporter to focus on one of these stations. If your transporter is broken, you have an increased chance in getting your molecules scrambled and that would result in hideous maleformations upon being rematerialized that could possibly cause death. There would be a large roundtime, perhaps several minutes, for these things to work and you'd have to be in range of the base station. For instance, you could go to Chodaku from Llanfair easily, but to get to Jareya you have to be on Chodaku and to get to Echak you have to be on Jareya.

This I think is a really fun idea. Our droids have cloaking devices...why can't we make them for people too?

This could be used in conjunction with medics. I see this as being a device to be implanted on the brain. Perhaps along with this might also be a translater. Having these things malfunction could be interesting to say the least. _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage

A comm can not pick up telepathed thoughts. See my post above. _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage

Right, because they're not supposed to work well together. If such a device existed, I wouldn't be surprised if it broke every 2 minutes. |

the ideas are good, but i'd be more interested in techs getting things that are unique concepts, not a mechanical version of what people already have (aka: telepathy sensor thing). _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!

I'm against personal teleportation devices. That would completely make the teleportation spells and psionic abilities useless and I doubt anybody would bother learning them.
If you're really dead-set for getting these types of things, I'd rather see them come in the form of transporter bays.. or whatever Star Trek called them. And setup in only the major cities (like, the starting cities of Abbindalore, Wargale, etc). That way there's some non-magical means of transportation that's faster than a boat (and more expensive per use!) but it's not too awesome. There'll still be reasons to get the supernatural teleportation abilities (for the less major of locations).
Well, that didn't really come out well-composed. But whatever.

You don't need to know a spell to get around without walking. Rift potions and tracker circles are what I use to get Kit and my tracker to the main places. I don't see why there can't be another, technological, way to get places. Maybe transporters should be tech-only then. _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage

Aren't rift potions going to take you to a special city that's not Llanfair, in the future? |

What's Wargale? Is there anything on cities I can go and look at? _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage

Well, there was that whole random information thread Trevor started close to the beginning. I feel bad for taking Vhen's job, but..
http://www.haelrahv.com/messageboard/viewtopic.php?t=113
..Though, it's not too much. But I'm sure we'll all find out in time. I even think there's been another thread somewhere. Oh well. I don't feel like using the search function for several minutes trying to find everything. I'm sure Vhen won't mind, though.

I'm just going to have to say that I oppose this. Trackers can't get to Echak 'quickly' and Mages can't get to Jareya 'quickly', and this suggestion gives Technicians the ability to do both. Anyway, this is just a Tracker's opinion, but I really prefer certain professions having things that are uniquely their own. _________________

Not exactly. It would take SEVERAL jumps (Llanfair to chodaku...walking...chodaku to jareya, etc) to do it with several minute long RTs...and you can't take groups. _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage
