No, this is not a scam (though it is a pyramid scheme). Yes, I'm asking you people to sign up for something.

Go there, sign up, and complete one of the offers, then get 5 others to do the same. The Infone deal seems to be the easiest, since there's nothing to cancel and you don't get charged if you don't use it. It doesn't always show up though.. others have said it mainly appears in the morning. Here's a couple of good sites with the issues you may have to deal with for each of the offers (practically all require credit cards):
http://www.ratetheoffers.com/
http://www.freeipodscommunity.com/

There's also a different site with a couple of alternatives to an iPod, but otherwise it's about the same:

Uh...no. No offense or anything...but no. Just save up and buy one. Get a Dell Jukebox. Cheaper, more features, easier to use with a PC.

I've been tempted to post my referral link as well, but I didn't know if it would be accepted very well with everyone. It's a very sweet deal for both parties involved (Gratis + you) and I'm surprised somebody didn't think of it before.

I just need two more people to sign up, now. Then I can join all the cool kids at my college that've gotten theirs.

It works, but you get spam (email and probably real mail). All the cool people just never leave their computer, so they don't need one.

This one isn't a pyramid in the classic sense. You just need 5, you don't need 5 people to get 5 people to get 5 people or whatever.

Reading that pyramid scheme site made me think of some past experiences I thought I'd share.

Years ago, I needed a job, and I saw an ad in the paper that sounded interesting. I made an interview time and I went up there. I was early of course, as was someone else. Then someone else. Then someone else.

Next thing I knew, I was in a group interview, which turned out to be for WebTV. If you're like me, you probably assume WebTV's were sold like any other computer/appliance product. You'd be wrong.

See, apparently the way WebTV is sold is by getting people to take a unit to their friends and family and sign them up to buy one. If you manage to talk 20 people into buying one, then you get offered a real job with the company.

What's the real job? Well, the real job is giving these group interviews to people to try to convince them to sucker 20 of their friends and family into buying a WebTV.

As if that wasn't enough, you have to pay for the unit you demo with. Yes, you have to buy a WebTV. So on day one you're already out the cost of a WebTV if you accept the "job". Seems like an easy way to sell WebTV's doesn't it? To people who don't even want it, they just want to make some money.

Let me impart some of my hard earned wisdom to those interested, particularly the younger persons among us:

1. If you go to an interview -- ANY interview, and it's a group interview, walk out immediately. Seriously. The chances are stacked 99 to 1 that they're trying to rip you off. That means you have a 1 in a 100 chance you're not going to have at least your time, if not more, swiped from you just by staying to hear their offer.

2. If they want money in any form in order to apply/accept/start the job, walk out. The only exception I could claim is if you're required to pay for a drug test IF YOU FAIL IT. Some companies will require you to sign a statement you will pay for the test should you fail. Seems fair enough. But if you don't know if you'll pass, walk out.

Security companies are fond of requiring people to buy uniforms, and sometimes either pay for training, or attend a week or two of training without being paid for it. Bear these risks in mind. If you're that desperate for a job, then good luck, but bear in mind companies like this rely on people's needs and helplessness, and/or drawing on hope, to stay in business.

3. If someone tricks you into going to a group pitch (like Amway for example), kick their ass and walk out. If they tell you straight up what it is and you are okay going, then go. But the fact is, these people are usually encouraged to not give details. They're told the people they invite are more likely to join up if they hear it from some authority in the company. If someone wants you to listen to a "business offer" but refuses to give details unless you come to a specific location at a specific time, you can probably assume it's either an attempt to blitz you with something you don't want, or it's illegal.

There's a reason people trying to pitch other people into Amway don't say, "Hey, wanna come over and listen to a demo of Amway?" They know you'd never show up. So if you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being tricked, just think about how rewarding it will be to share their shame and try to trick people into listening to a speech about a product you can't say publicly without feeling like you need a shower afterward.

4. On purchasing from companies: If you receive an offer via spam and it sounds good, don't be tempted to buy anyway since the offer seems great. Keep in mind, even if by chance you happen to be the rare person who doesn't mind spam email, most of the world finds it to be a shady practice, and this company has email an unsolicited offer to you despite knowing that it's considered a shady practice.

5. Know your state's laws regarding contracts. Some states provide a period of time wherein you can back out of ANY legal contract if you do it quickly enough. If you realize you've been rooked, don't assume it has to remain that way.

I once almost had a job at a company called Cut Co.

They sold knives.

I almost took it just so I can say that I worked for a job with an overly amusing name.

cockeyed.com is a great site.

He(Rob) has written some interesting stuff.

Telemarketing

His travel journals are pretty interesting, too.

I haven't received any spam mail yet (with a Gmail account), and I've been signed up for weeks. Anyway, I thought it wouldn't hurt to at least try to get some people to sign up.

Dude, why would I ever want an MP3 device to interface with my PC?! That's like...using my PC for something other than Telnet, I have a happy G4 for all my other computing needs.

Although I did have a fun time networking iTunes for windows to share the same directory as the iTunes for mac....god forbid I ever turn a computer off, then everything might stop working....

I used to work for Quixtar. I made money, but it was a complete hassle. The products were expensive...but they worked wonderfully!
