Hello, I play Belethe Del'Gennen. I just started a few days ago and am excited by all the things we can do in this game....

....eventhough currently I've been mostly foraging my brains out. Very Happy

Anyway, as my first post, I want to ask about the MOST important thing in the whole world. Alterations. I'm used to more stringent alteration rules in DragonRealms and all this is so brand new to me. I'm asking here because I don't want to waste the alterers' time by asking all these questions. Also, I usually prefer to provide designs ahead of time because I don't design well under limited time.

Gosh, I don't even know where to start. I guess I want to know about everything alteration-related. Let me see if I can come up with questions.

1. What are all the types of alterations we can get, besides the mundane (no verb, no bonus)? What's the average price for getting those types of alterations? I'll keep in mind that different alterers have subjective prices.

2. Which of those types of alterations are considered rare (and possibly out of my affordable range)?

3. Will I need to provide the base item for most alterers? Or can I ask for something I don't have?

4. I read somewhere about mistsilk and wondered how easy would it be to find an alterer willing to make an item from that material?

5. Is it usually 1 item per session or are multiple alterations per session standard?

I can't think of anything else to ask, though I'm sure more will pop up later.

I got to observe an alteration session between Liam and Cai. Thank you both very much for allowing me to watch! I can say right now, being somewhat of a prudish nature, it was a real eye-opening session. *G* I learnt much more than I was ready to know about clit and labia rings.

I think it will be a looong while before I'll even consider asking to alter items of a sexual nature. At least not until I can stop blushing and feeling flustered when I consider it. Embarassed

But it's definitely cool. I really like that we're free to express ourselves creatively with little to no restrictions on content. And wow, there are some really cool alterations I've seen in the past few days.

Basically, the answer to all of your questions is "Yes, but it depends on the alterer."

Hi Belethe (again) and welcome to Haelrahv Very Happy

Although you are correct, each GM or GM Merchant has their own rules, I'll answer what I can about my own rules.

The 'mundane' alteration thing is mine. I've been having impromptu hide and seek contests the last few nights, first 3 to find me each gets one free of those (as you know). There are also bigger contests where one can win vouchers from myself or a whole slew of other GMs. I also, from time to time, will open a list up and announce that I'm doing alterations. My list is always pay for, and I have set prices:

1. Basic alteration: $1,000 *This is for a simple NAME change, or what you see when you TAP the item.
2. Extensive alteration: $8,000 *This is for what I term a 'mundane' alteration. NAME(TAP), DESCRIPTION (LOOK), AND READ
3. Stretching containers: $15,000 *This means I will increase the size of your container, be it a backpack, or some pockets on a pair of pants.
4. Bonuses: $20,000 PER Bonus (1+) with a maximum of 5+. *This means I will add, for example, a 5+ bonus to stealth to a pair of boots. Anytime you wear those boots, you will see a number in () next to your skill amount for stealth, that is your bonus.
5. Verbs: $25,000 PER Verb (minimum). *This means, for example, if you wanted to have your dress flutter in the breeze when touched, it would cost you at least $25,000. I had to put the minimum on there because some people have come up with some very difficult to do verbs and I really should have charged them more than I did.

Of course, all of these rules are subject to my approving your alteration. I won't do anything which doesn't make sense to me, but even if I say no, I do try to come up with an alternative solution.

I can also increase weapon or armor quality, but I haven't done any of those yet, and until I set a price for it, I'm not doing any. There may be other types of alterations I can do, but I can't think of any right now.

winddancer wrote:

See above for prices. As for rare...well, not sure what you mean. I think almost everyone over level 2 has at least one unique item.

winddancer wrote:

We can create from scratch as easily as converting an existing item.

winddancer wrote:
4. I read somewhere about mistsilk and wondered how easy would it be to find an alterer willing to make an item from that material?

Very easy. Since I'm the one who made it, you should have asked me when you won my contest. Cool It doesn't count as a verbed item because it is already coded to do it's thing, and I've set it up in the system to be almost as easy to create as, say, leather.

winddancer wrote:

I normally limit my alterations to 1 item per session unless the person is redeeming my vouchers. Hope this answers some of your questions.

Oooh, thank you, Faith and everyone who answered!! That clears a lot of things up for me and allows me time to make plans for future alterations. Smile I like to make advance planning for perfection purposes.

Hehe. There's a difference between offering suggestions for OTHER people...than it is to specifically ask for something for myself. And I don't have to give detailed descriptions for the item which saves me from the flustered reaction. Smile

I still like my vibrating in-built dildo diaper idea though. Maybe that will show up someday.... Heehee.

This is very, very hard to answer for three reasons:

1. Individual alterers are given virtually full discretion and what they will do will vary wildly.

2. Rules are less firm here than they will be in "live".

3. We have a lack of firm alteration policies in many cases and individual staff are left to make judgment calls. Much of this will be be addressed with deeper official alteration rules in "live".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition to changing the name, LOOK and READ texts for items, in some cases messages issued when an item is used in some manner can be changed, bonuses can be added for stats/skills, an item can be made a perma light source, reduced in weight, its capacity increased if it is a container, etc. Weapons and armor have a quality rating that can be improved. Special actions can be added by some merchants, if they do that type of work. The price varies a lot but can easily span hundreds of thousands, or over a million credits if there are significant stat/skill bonuses involved, etc.

Belethe wrote:

Stat/skill bonuses are fairly rare as a menu item from merchants, but bonuses over about +3 are even more rare. It's bounced back and forth, but in the past, perma-lit items have been quite rare as an alteration option. Very high quality ratings for weapons/armor are very, very costly.

Belethe wrote:

Fairly often, no. Then again, fairly often, yes. This depends on the alterer and the type of item, materials involved, etc.

Belethe wrote:

Faith addressed this one.

Belethe wrote:

Usually one, but it's fairly common for two to be allowed, depending on the merchant's general guidelines, time available and mood.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

So what will alterations be like in "live"? That's probably your next question!

I'll give you some general goals we have identified so far:

- Generally, making alterations more pricy for mundane alterations, and less freely available.

- More firm pricing with less variation between merchants.

- Clearly identified limits on container sizes etc.

- Favoring the "best" items, in general, to crafting systems to allow players the ability to product the best stuff (generally).

- Making stat/skill bonus items far more rare.

- Making perma-lit items MUCH more rare.

- Retaining our very loose policies in terms of how risque items can be. Revealing clothing, lingerie, etc are perfectly fine in our world and I don't expect this to change. But, we will have *some* rules on how far we'll go.

- Adding new dimensions to items so that the possible details one can have altered (or alter via craft systems) is much more rich. For example, adding many new customizable elements to weaponry.

- Holding scheduled alteration events in addition to the random alterers and identifying times that will allow as many people as possible to enjoy alterations (i.e. making sure we have some off peak alterers available often enough as a specific goal for us).

It is quite possible that most of what staff will do for you in the future will be the mundane changes and much of the advanced changes will be done via player crafting systems. Here's why:

* Players like to craft.

* We have professions that are geared around the specific concept of crafting.

* Making item modifications more readily available makes it easier for us to introduce systems for breakage, wear, etc which we as a game staff find desirable for the game's balance and integrity. Risk will be an important element for the game, because it allows us to appreciate what we have and at the same time, opens new possibilities for what one might achieve by putting forward such risk. It's much easier to justify having an uber sword of death and destruction readily available to high level players, if there are significant and real risks involved in acquiring and keeping it.

Thanks for the information, Trevor. It clears up a lot of fog for me.

This is the first time I've ever been in a game in early stages so I'm not quite sure what to expect. It's been a great experience thus far. Smile I can't wait to see what happens when the game goes live.

There are also cosmetic alterations; changing how YOU look...you could get wings or a monkey tail, or elf ears. Also, there are tattoos which is a sort of alteration. Smile

Yeah, playing with people's flesh is fun Smile Though, I wanted to mention that many of those things (wings, horns, tails, etc.) aren't going to fly in live.

What are these "elf"s, and are they better with wasabi or ketchup and extra pickles?

...Errr. Hehe. No, no tattoos for my Belethe. She's afraid of pain.

She hunted asapis once thinking she could shoot her arrow from far away...boy, was that a mistake. Which is why she doesn't like to hunt anymore and avoids it unless she feels she absolutely has to.

And she doesn't HAVE to get a tattoo Razz

I'm not going to promise, but I'd say that it's pretty likely. Your alteration fits more with the world than many of the others I did.

I have a few questions about alterations, too.

First, I don't think I'm clear on alterations that boost stats or skills. The way I understand it, if you want something to boost bladed weapons (or any weapon, i guess), you need to get a weapon of that type altered with this bonus, and you also have to hold that weapon and be using it to get the bonus.

Is there a general rule on what skill/stat bonuses can be added to what types of items? What would be acceptable items to add an unarmed bonus to? A pair of gloves that weren't armor? I agree that it seems silly to get a bonus to bladed weapons from a pair of boots or something. But, maybe an evasion bonus would be okay?

I'm just trying to get a general idea because being a guardian, I don't need bonuses in weapons, since i don't use them. So, no hard feelings there. But, not being able to hold a weapon during combat, I am also unable to get any of the stat-boosting bonuses that are available to other professions thru weapons, shields, or armor. And, I'm kind of at a loss as to what I'd be able to hold in combat that I could add an unarmed or evasion bonus to. (you can't do alot of the unarmed moves if you are holding anything at all in your hands).

Anyway, as usual this post got longer than I intended. Thanks for your time.
