OK, I'm not going to address the whole "having a title = my profession sucks" thing at this time, but as to the actual bug here...
Not my preferred solution, but I put in a change so that if you use the exact phrase (i.e. Medic) it will choose that over a partial match. So "medi" would do "medical student" since that is the first matching choice in the list, but "medic" will do medic.
