I had a friend ask me and truthfully, I never really thought about writing it down so I have no clue. Is there anyway we can get a list of exactly how much skill you need in Alchemy to learn each tome?

Generally, careful player experimentation is how one gets the exact answers to those kind of questions. Wink

In order to be able to study a tome you need x3 the alchemy skill (base before any bonuses) of the formula number. Now just because a tome on the shelf is 5 doesn't mean it's 5 (more specifically 12 which requires 42 skill cause there's some unreleased formula inbetween).

Now Research will play in once you are able to study the tome, by reducing the time needed to study it overall.

I was under the impression that Intelligence factors in as well, though that could be heresay.

Intelligence and research will both allow you to learn a tome more quickly. Neither are requirements to actually learn the mixture though. Since intellect affects how quickly your exp pool fills, and tomes teach well, it is also quite useful in getting more exp from each study as well.

Im not sure that is accurate...

With 24 alchemy and 24 research I was able to learn the first
11 potions.
I have since then increased to 26 alchemy and 26 research
and am still unable to learn the 12th (luminescent tome).

Anyway, for the first 11 tomes it was less than 3x per tome overall.

Sorry I didnt record what I had for each Tome.

Hope this helps some though...


BTW anyone know what potion the "luminescent tome" teaches?

i know that there are some missing potions which makes the 12th potion take longer to learn, not sure what the As Kelasa said in her post... (more specifically 12 which requires 42 skill cause there's some unreleased formula inbetween). And the 12th potion is Elixir of Quickness, which grants one supernatural speed when consumed.

Well with 51 alchemy, I still can't study the 13th formula. So if they're all really 3 points apart, there must be several between #12 and #13.

Here are the tome descriptions, their respective mixture names, and their "number" in the alchemy list. I didn't note skill req, because I agree with Hunter.

a yellowed tome        --> Tincture of Healing          (1)
a tattered tome        --> Tincture of Vigor            (2)
a worn tome            --> Potion of Might              (3)
a slightly-used tome   --> Potion of Resilience         (4)
a battered tome        --> Potion of Agility            (5)
a ripped tome          --> Potion of Deftness           (6)
a faded tome           --> Infusion of Allure           (7)
an old tome            --> Infusion of Brilliance       (8)
a stained tome         --> Infusion of Clarity          (9)
an aged tome           --> Infusion of Sight            (10)
a black tome           --> Elixir of Night              (11)
a luminescent tome     --> Elixir of Quickness          (13)
a red tome             --> Tincture of Life             (15)
a deep gray tome       --> Tincture of Magic            (16)
a heavy tome           --> Elixir of Invisibility       (19)
a thick tome           --> Potion of Deflection         (21)

Also remember that the alchemy skill needed to study a tome is raw skill, excluding any bonuses/mods.

blue - rime potion (24)
scorched - searing potion (25)
silver - potion of dissipation (26)
green - potion of stability (27)
purple - iron will infusion (2Cool

Speaking of pieces of literature that only use raw skill, I just changed spellsong scrolls to work in the same fashion. Being able to learn it from the music is a guarantee you'll be able to perform it.
