Thought Id start a new topic for this. Got bored and decided to try my hand at bow making. And I stank ! Shocked

Coupla questions...

What skills come into play in bowmaking ? Archery and craftsmanship Im assuming. Any others ? Also what stats come into play ?

I know Artisans are the best makers of all things carved etc etc, but will Trackers ever be any good at it ? Since we natural bow users and stuff ? Or will making of stuff with ones hands always be best left to Artisans ?

Also has anyone else had any more luck than me when it comes to making em, artisan, tracker or otherwise ? I can carve a shoddy bow until I get to flexing the limbs, then I fall to pieces and seem to rely heavily on guess work.

Spank yas,

Shadak

You're correct that archery and craftsmanship are the skills involved, coordination is also important for most parts of the process.

Trackers are a very close second when it comes to woodworking, though not specifically just to bows. After all, staves and clubs are weapons easily found in nature too.

Reguarding difficulty, it is hard, it's designed to grow all the way to 100th, with bows a good bit better then store bought being possible on the high ends. Also the type of wood makes a difference, try Gaoun, it's the easiest.

When you flex the bow perception is an important factor, also since you're not carving into the wood, you can keep flexing it over and over again until you're sure... IF you have the patience for it.

Hope this helps.

Good good. Something came to mind today when I was playing with Gaoun earlier on. Will either archery or craftmanship cap out early ?

What I mean by this, mainly from the craftsmanship point of view, as your skill with bows goes up and up, youll obviously get better at making em. Youll understand intricate details of bows, thus enabling you to make better ones.

But with craftsmanship, surely at a certain level of skill, youll be able to handle the tools as well for this type of work as you need to, and thus further skill in craftsmanship will not necessarily result in better bows. Or have I gotten it completely wrong ?

Masters of certain fields always have more things they can learn. Most, though, tend to focus their time and energy in one particular sub-area in order to hone specific skills that they seemingly have talent in. I would assume that Craftsmanship is a "catchall" (for lack of a better term) for intricacies, new techniques, and various other things.

Specifically reguarding bowmaking, you can cap out your skill on a specific wood, not being able to make a bow any better, but move up to a harder wood and you have more room to grow, along with a better quality final product then one made of a lesser wood. Eventually it'll be possible to cap the very hardest wood (jalumin) but by that point you have skills over 200 and coord over 100.

True, though in the live version we're strongly concidering breaking craftsmanship into woodworking, metalworking, etc.

Thank you very much for the appraisals on crafted bows!!!

Could we get the "Crafted by" on the bows like we do on the arrows by any chance?

look bol
Crafted by Inaira S'real 28th Wiv, 250 NC

Also, is making bows just not set up in the woodcrafting skill system yet?

Would be interested in possibly purchasing a high end bow assuming someone is able to surpass the store quality bows. Those who are able, feel free to contact me in PMs or in game.

Here's one of the shop short bows:

You are certain it is of average quality and workmanship.

This weapon is capable of doing very good damage when fired.

It looks as though it would be advantageous at pole range.

and a silbein one that I made:

You are certain it is of good quality and workmanship.

Longbows:

The shop is of average quality, very good damage. I couldn't make one over poor quality, very good damage.

245 in archery
140 in craftsmanship

I'm not sure how much craftsmanship actually does add to it being better quality, if anyone does know I'd appreciate the info.

I played with a few different woods, from one of the easiest to the hardest.

app my longbow
You carefully look over a silbein longbow.
It is worn on or over a single shoulder.
Use of this weapon in melee combat requires proficiency in the blunt weapons skill.
Use of this weapon when fired requires proficiency in the archery skill.
You are certain it is of good quality and workmanship.
This weapon uses arrows for ammunition.

This weapon is capable of doing insignificant blunt damage.
This weapon is not suitable for piercing attacks.
This weapon is not suitable for slashing attacks.
This weapon is capable of doing impressive damage when fired.

It looks as though it would be clumsy at melee range.
It looks as though it would be advantageous at pole range.
It looks as though it would be practical at pilum range.
It looks as though it would be practical at missile range.
