and I plan on making tech-made comms work the same way:
Based on the quality and workmanship put into them, there will be chance for them to sputter out and die. The crappier the gadget, the more likely it is to suddenly die on you. Conversely, the better the gadget, the less likely it will be to suddenly shut off -- and if the gadget is perfectly made, it won't ever randomly shut off.

If ya do this, then nobody is gonna want a comm that's less than perfect. Nobody is gonna want to invest alot of money on the different upgrades(range, mail notification, channels, etc) if the less than perfect comm is gonna sputter out and die on them. Heck, why bother with all this? They could go buy a comm at the comm shop and not worry about the comm itself ever dieing on them and having to force them to buy a new one. And I dont mean the integrity chip which of course would eventually break down and need fixing. I'm gonna quit here cause i'm tired and i might start rambling. Niters. _________________ Lick or Be Licked |

Because storebought comms will come with a preset chance of shutting off out of the blue. When I say that comms/etc will 'die' on you, I only mean that they'll just shut off. You can still turn them back on, they're not completely dead with no hope of revival. So don't be so defeatist. Storebought is great, but what makes creation systems awesome is being able to make stuff that's better than storebought.
BTW, I'm going to add a way to extract those upgrades you put into comms so you can use them again. I know upgrades can get expensive, so this way everyone won't feel like they've just thrown away money. _________________ Something wicked this way comes... |

I made a flashlight yesterday for someone and I used two poor quality parts in it...and it still came out perfect. Why are comms so hard to get perfect then if it's just a bit of plastic for the buttons? _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage

guess the chip part really matters _________________ A bright-eyed Thekko Ku Kalla dressed in a dapper sailor suit takes to flight and careers through the air toward the Modan Kucho and slams into him!

No buttons for comms anymore! Then they all have the potential for being perfect! _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage

I think I'm gonna rework the formula that determines the descriptive outcome of the gadget.. perfect gadgets with less-than-perfect parts is looking less and less appealing to me. _________________ Something wicked this way comes... |

Good. It's only comms that currently seem to require perfect parts. Flashlights are insanely easy to make with up to 6 of the 8 parts in them less than perfect. Seems oddly skewed. _________________ "I reject your reality and substitute my own!" -- Adam Savage
