anyone who knows me, will know that my answer is of course,

SILLY AMERICANS.

germans have public water, but no-one drinks it due to residual fear about the plague. instead, we have sprudelwasser, a sort of tonic. that is what you will get, if you ask for water.

second, germans have soda, including all sort of disgusting german brands. but then again, taste is subjective. any drink of which the component syrup is able to dissolve rust (e.g., pepsi, coke), i am disinterested in.

third (though most germans would place this first), germany has beer. lots of it. too much of it.

ok thats my say. my adoptive parents who are from the us east coast call it soda pop.

Called it pop most of my life, so that's where my vote went. Then I realized the Silly Americans vote and wished I could change it Wink

Soda or pop make sense, but coke? Even if it's not coke at all? Hmm

And of course, water from the tap (faucet) would be Council Pop Very Happy

The coke thing is regional, just like the soda or pop preference. I ignored the redneck "Sody" one, honestly. Wink My brother though...lived with me in Silicon Valley from the day he was born (obviously) and called everything coke. I don't know where he picked it up from.

Pronounced like -"Jodie" buth with an S. Heh. Perhaps spelling it "sodie" would be better. A friend heard some "rednecks" exclaim in a shop, "Wait yer ass there! I gots to get a sodie!"

Keep in mind this friend was a very conservative catholic person who regularly insults people, though.

I've yet to hear any of the local rednecks (and yes, there are quite a few) say anything close to "sodie". "Soder", though, I've heard more times than I'd like to count. And to correct your pronounciation of southern drawl...

"Wai' yer ass [righ'] der! Ah gos'ah gitta <whatever>."

Yeah.. sometimes I really hate this town. And by redneck I'm referring to the social fringe that enjoys wearing the basics of cowboy attire -- tight jeans which are tucked into snake-skin steel-toed boots, chaps, a belt whose buckle is ten times bigger than it ever should be, the infamous hat, and a series of shotguns displayed proudly in the rear mirror of their Ford pick-up (oh, do thick shaggy mullets count?) -- in an area where cowboys simply do not exist.
