You can skin stuff while in hiding, but you get the "search what?" message if you try to search a critter while in hiding. Seems weird to me.

You also see the corpse of a saber-toothed rhurgul who is lying down.
You notice exits leading north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west, and northwest.
>hide
You slip into hiding.
Roundtime: 4 sec.
>get knife
You get a blackened metal knife with a serrated blade from a black leather sword belt.
>skin rhur
You successfully skin a saber-toothed rhurgul, acquiring a nice pelt in the process.
Roundtime: 5 sec.
>put pelt in back
You put a large rhurgul pelt in a rugged high-capacity telyron-fiber backpack.
>put knife in belt
You put a blackened metal knife with a serrated blade in a black leather sword belt.
>search rhur
Search what?
>unhide
You slip out of hiding.
>search rhur
You search a saber-toothed rhurgul but find nothing.
A saber-toothed rhurgul's corpse decays into dust.
